The equipment you need to safely enjoy mountain biking does not need to be expensive. Just about any bike with fat tires and front shocks will be able to handle off road use. Check out local bike shops for second hand or trade-in bikes. Some even have bikes that were used in their rental programs for sale at the end of the season at greatly reduced prices Rental bikes are chosen by dealers for reliability and ease of repair. These features are important for anyone!
A helmet is absolutely necessary for everyone riding a bike, whether on or off the road. A helmet must be CSA approved for cycling. If parents wear a helmet as a matter of habit, kids follow this example. Lots of bike stores and department stores sell inexpensive, comfortable helmets in lots of sizes and colours. This is an item that should not be used second hand. Be sure to have the helmet fitted properly. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has published a poster to show the correct position of a helmet for optimum safety. This poster has been placed in most local stores that sell bike helmets.
For comfort, you might want to bring a small backpack with snacks and water or energy drinks, which are a great idea if you are planning to be out for any length of time. The ride is always fun when it turns into a picnic! Remember to pack out any garbage that you bring in.
Now, where do you go? Check out a county forest close to your community. Most have wide trails suitable for all biking skill levels. Railtrails are a fantastic way to get started. They are mostly flat, have a hard surface and are easily accessible. The www.simcoecountytrails.net website has a lot of trail information. Or ask at any local bike shop. Other great sources are the Ontario Cycling Association (www.ontariocycling.org) and Chico Racing (www.chicoracing.com).
Simcoe County is also the home of one of the premier mountain bike destinations in Canada .The Hardwood Hills Mountain Bike Centre has many kilometers of trails for riders from beginner to advanced. Their clinics teach mountain bike skills to enthusiasts of all ages and the summer camp programs are an amazing way for kids to learn the sport.
