There’s 3 feet of snow on the trailhead, with big drifts and flurries. No problem.
Snowshoeing is as much high-calibre recreation as a
fantastic cardiac work out, and offers the liberty to go
anywhere, the snow is normally too deep to walk. Give it a
try, and before long, you will get the hang of it, as the
learning curve is extremely short. While the older wooden
snowshoes work fine and are preferred by many, the new
aluminum shoes are lighter and smaller, yet are marvellously
efficient and comfortable, and provide remarkable traction
and ‘buoyancy’ on the snow. For a small investment in shoes,
and perhaps some Nordic poles or ski poles, enjoy a whole
winter of fun and exploration. No other activity on
the winter trails or in a forest, provides you with more
freedom to go deep, go far, or go anywhere.
“Karen got us each a pair of snowshoes for my
birthday, and a little excited, we went out that morning.
They were so light and compact - they worked great. Heck, we
had so much energy left, we went again that afternoon.”
