Huronia Trails and Greenways, the County of Simcoe's GIS department, and the Simcoe County District Health Unit have partnered to launch a trails website on the maps.simcoe.ca website of the County of Simcoe, thanks in part to funding received from the Trillium Foundation.
This website is an interactive mapping website that is managed by the County GIS Office. The web GIS tools found on this site provide a common platform for the exchange and distribution of real-time information pertaining to Simcoe County, Ontario. In summary, the Interactive Maps at maps.simcoe.ca create a one-window portal for the dissemination of local geographic data and trail information. Trails in Barrie, Collingwood, Orillia, Penetanguishene, Midland, and Wasaga Beach as well as the Tay Shore Trail, Tiny Trail, Lake Country Oro-Medonte Railrail, North Simcoe Railtrail, Uhthoff Trail, Ramara Railtrail and the Thornton-Cookstown Trans Canada Trail have been loaded onto the Coutny’s GIS website. Comprehensive information has been uploaded on access points, parking lots, trail amenities, and points of interest, to give the user access to all the information they need to have an enjoyable "Trails Experience" in Simcoe County.
To access the trail maps, go to http://maps.simcoe.ca and click on "Trails and Greenways". The first time you sign on, you will have to sign a disclaimer. Afterwards, use this site to locate where the trails are, zoom in by clicking anywhere on the map or by using the zoom icons on the right of the screen. Use the hand icon for panning (i.e. to drag map up or down, or sideways). Go down to a scale of 1:12,000 or smaller, and you will be amazed at the level of detail you will be able to see, right down to actual trees, ponds, houses, etc. This level of detail is called ortho-photography and these aerial maps were made in 2002, some even as recent as 2007 (Alliston, Alcona, Bradford)
Open up the legend, which is also located on the right of the screen, to get a listing of the icons used, or click on the light bulb to see details of the point of interest you clicked on. There are also tools to measure distance, area, show coordinates or create a URL. You can customize your view by adjusting the selections in "Map Contents". You can save a file, print it, e-mail a map, etc.
You will also see the route of the Ganaraska Trail and various trails on MNR lands, however, no details have been loaded as yet.
The trail data in this map is still being fine-tuned, so if you are aware of an error or omission, please send an e-mail to info@simcoecountytrails.net for correction in a future upload.
Meanwhile, enjoy a "Trails Experience" on a trail near you or if you are from further away, come and check out our network of trails in Simcoe County. For trail related questions, write us at info@simcoecountytrails.net.
